Staying safe

Sicher arbeiten

Here you'll find everything you need to know.

How do I negotiate money and services?

It is up to you alone to decide whom you want to have as a client. You can refuse at any time without having to give reasons.

Tell the client what your service costs. Only start working after you have been paid the money.

You do not have to do anything you don't want to do. Make it clear what you are offering and do not let anybody persuade you to do something you are uncomfortable with. You do not have to put up with someone ignoring your boundaries and doing something against your will.

How do I protect myself while working on the street?

When working on the street it is important to choose a well-lit place where others can see you.

When you get into a car, always make sure that the doors are unlocked and that you can get out at any time.

Memorise any special characteristics of your clients. Also memorise the colour and make of the car and the registration number.

Always tell somebody you trust where you are going with a client. Also let them know your client’s car registration number.

Stay as close as possible to your location with the client.

Try to avoid awkward positions for yourself during sex work, for example during oral sex. It is best to remain at eye level with your client.

If possible, don’t wear clothes with cords or laces and preferably no scarves or necklaces.

How do I protect myself when working in an apartment or hotel?

In a hotel or apartment, the rooms must not be locked either, you must always be able to move freely.

When you go to the room with the client, always let him or her go first.

Make sure there are no sharp or very heavy objects lying around that might be misused as weapons.

Lock up your personal valuables safely in a locker.

Make sure you always have your cell phone or another phone within reach and readily available.

How do I protect myself while working in a prostitution establishment?

Make sure that your workspace cannot be seen from the outside. Use curtains or blinds for this purpose.

Every room must have a suitable alarm system so that you can call for help quickly in an emergency, for example via an emergency switch. Talk to the operator of your brothel or club if there is no facility like this in the room.

You must always be able to open the door of your work space from the inside.

Make sure your valuables are locked in a cupboard or something similar so that no one can steal from you.

Make sure that your clients do not use the same shower and toilet facilities as you do. Always lock the door in the sanitary facilities.

How do I protect myself during sex work?

Work with condoms only. This will protect you against diseases. As a woman, a condom also protects you from unwanted pregnancy. You also protect your clients with it.
This is how to handle condoms safely:

  • Make sure that the condom is undamaged. It must not be past its expiration date. You can find the expiration date on the packaging.
  • Make sure that the condom fits tightly and does not slip. Check it yourself and don't rely on your client.
  • Always use a new condom for each new practice.
  • Use extra-strong condoms for anal sex.
  • Always use fat-free lubricants, otherwise the condom can tear.

Make sure that your clients and you yourself never touch your anal area and then your vagina with the same hand. This could cause germs and bacteria to enter your vagina.

Disinfect your sex toys after every client.

During passive oral sex you should use a dental dam as a woman, so you can protect yourself and your clients from diseases.

If you want to work during your period you can use soft tampons. Or you can offer oral sex and hand massages only during your period, which would be even better to protect your body during this particularly sensitive time.

How can I take good care of my health in general?

Try to eat as healthily as possible and get enough sleep. Take breaks at work and get some exercise, such as going for a walk.

Don’t use drugs and alcohol.

Go for regular check-ups at the public health office for sexually transmitted infections and HIV. These check-ups are anonymous and free of charge. You can find out more on the website of your place of residence. We are also happy to offer advice, just reach out to us.

What else can I do for my safety?

Make phone calls to your clients before you start work to get a feel for them.
Do not get involved with clients if you know that they have had too much alcohol or taken drugs.
Don't use your real name at work, even if you like the client. You can get an alias. You only have to tell your real name to the police or other authorities and to the operator of the establishment where you work.

Don't tell anyone where you live and don't put it in your internet ad.

Get a separate cell phone and e-mail address for work so you don't have to use your private data.

Do not allow your clients to take photos or videos of you.

Think carefully about which photos you want to use in your ad on the Internet. Because there is always a risk that someone will misuse the photo. This can even happen if you have already deleted the photo. You can also disguise yourself in the photo or wear a mask so people cannot recognise you.
