Here you'll find everything you need to know.

What is social insurance?

Germany has a social insurance system. It includes 5 different types of insurance: health insurance, nursing care insurance, accident insurance, unemployment insurance and pension insurance. These insurances offer protection against financial hardship, for example after an accident, when you are ill, need nursing care or are unable to work.

Am I obliged to take out social insurance?

It depends on how you work. In brief, it depends on whether you are self-employed or working as an employee. If you are not certain, just ask us and we will help you clarify this. You can also have it checked at the Clearing Office of Deutsche Rentenversicherung. You can find their contact details here:
www.deutsche-rentenversicherung.de

or

www.deutsche-rentenversicherung.de

What insurances do I have if I am working as an employee?

If you are working as an employee, you automatically have health, nursing care, pension, accident  and unemployment insurance. Your employer is required by law to sign you up for these insurances and pay the contributions on your behalf. You have to contribute half of the costs. Your share will be deducted from your wages and transferred with them. The costs of statutory accident insurance are paid by the employer alone. An exception is made for so-called mini-jobs. You can find more information here.

What do I need to know about health insurance?

In Germany you need to have health insurance. If you need advice on this, please contact us or the statutory health insurance providers, for example here:  www.patientenberatung.de You can find more information here.

What do I need to know about nursing care insurance?

You do not have to take out extra nursing care insurance, as it is automatically included in your health insurance.

What do I need to know about unemployment insurance?

Unemployment insurance offers you financial protection when you are or become unemployed. You will then receive money from the state which you can use to pay your living expenses.

What do I need to know about pension insurance?

If you are no longer able to work, you usually receive money from the pension insurance. The pension is less than your earned income, but you can use it to pay for your living expenses.

Are there different types of pensions?

Yes. For example, there is old-age pension, disability pension or survivor’s pension.

Will I receive an old-age pension?

You receive an old-age pension if you have worked or raised children for at least five years (“minimum insurance period”) and have reached a certain age (65 to 67).

Do I have to apply for old-age pension?

Yes, you need to apply for an old age pension. You should do this in good time, at the latest about three months before the start of your pension, which depends on your age.

Where can I get help and advice on pensions?

You can find more information at Deutsche Rentenversicherung:

www.deutsche-rentenversicherung.de

Or you can visit one of the counselling centres of Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Find out which one is closest to you here.

But you are also welcome to contact us. For example, we will consider with you whether you can apply for additional support if your pension is not sufficient to cover your costs of living.

What do I need to know about accident insurance?

If you have an accident while you are at work or on your way to work or home, statutory accident insurance will help. You can find more information here.

What insurances do I need if I am self-employed?

You must have health and nursing care insurance. You can find more details here. You have to pay the contributions yourself.

You are free to decide whether you also want to have pension insurance, accident insurance and unemployment insurance, but you are not obliged to do so. You can find information about these insurances here.

You can take out voluntary unemployment insurance for the self-employed if

  • you have worked as an employee for at least 12 months in the last 30 months before becoming self-employed, or
  • you were receiving unemployment benefits immediately prior to becoming self-employed.
